The town of Carrières-sous-Poissy is situated on the right bank of the Seine, 30 minutes from Paris by train (SNCF/RATP train station in Poissy) or by car on the A13 and A14 (come through Orgeval).

Carrières is a young town: 28.7% of the population are under 20 and 7.9% are over 65.

A brief history

The town is thought to take its name from its main business: the rubble stone quarries. The “sous Poissy” part of its name became final in 1832.

Carrières was once a hub for the river fleet, and a major farming and market-gardening centre. In the early 20th century, the town was home to a race horse training centre on the current Château Vanderbilt site (named after the wealthy American owner and horse-racing enthusiast).

Cultural heritage: the Aventure automobile car collection, Château Vanderbilt, artesian well, old navigational lock, old bridge, etc.

Numerous green spaces and walks: Etang de la Galiotte, Ile de la dérivation, Parc de l’Hôtel de ville, Terrain de la Fosse, Parc Provence, sports trail on the banks of the Seine, hiking trails, etc.

The Parc du Peuple de l’herbe will be built in the town in 2016. It will be the largest recreational and landscape park in the Yvelines (113 hectares, listed as a sensitive natural area).
